In hip hop, artists are welcomed to the label by getting the label’s chain. Since Jay Z was a label president at Island when Infinity On High was released, he chained Fall Out Boy with a Roc-A-Fella chain—but because of their size, they got the women’s style. According to Pete:
At one point Jay-Z gave us Roc-A-Fella chains and there was a chaining ceremony and he was like, “I gave you guys the girl sizes because the guy sizes would look crazy on you.” And we were like, “Okay, cool. Thanks!” We didn’t know what to do.
Whoops! Posted too soon. There’s this tweet:
He talks about it in this interview beginning around the three-minute mark:
At some point they were like, “Jay wants to give you guys Roc pieces.” And we were like, “Oh, okay. Cool!” And they were like “wink wink, they’re the real ones ‘cause they’re getting polished and they don’t polish the fake ones.” … So the chains are laid out and someone went to reach for it and Jay was like “nah, nah, nah, I got to chain you.” And so he put them on all of us and after he put them on he was like, “I gave you the girl ones because the real ones would look weird on you guys.” … We just thought we were going to like hang out or something and we walked in and the chains were there and we were like “ahhh what?”
